In John Steinbeck’s classic novel, “Of Mice and Men,” Curley’s wife is seen as a cheap possession, a toy that belongs to Curley. A possession that he gets to control. His lack of love, respect and attention results to her death in the end. By all the men she’s seen as a tramp, they think that she’s out cause trouble. But the truth is she’s desperately lonely. She just wants someone to talk to. She’s missed out on a wonderful life that could have been hers, and that hurts her.

Curley’s wife is a beautiful woman, whose blossoming with love, with big hopes for the future. She dreams of becoming a big actress n Hollywood. She wants to become rich and famous, and have nice clothes. She wants to make something from her life. Because of her beauty she was promised great things. But in reality her dreams never came true, the letters she awaited never came, the promises that were made to her were never fulfilled. “Could’ve been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes”. She refused to stay where she would be a nobody. “Well, I wasn’t gonna stay no place where I couldn’t get nowhere or make something of my life”. So one night she meat Curley at the Riverside Dance Palace, and she married him, he became her ticket out from her desperate life. She never married him out of love and passion just of desperation. “I don’t like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella.”

Curley’s relationship with his wife is very distant. He treats her with no respect, his very possessive of her, he tries to control who she talks to and what she can and can’t do. His also disloyal. Only after weeks of their marriage his already going to “cat houses”. His cheating her left right and center. And like any person she needs to be loved, she needs to be cared for, she needs attention and she needs companionship. The other men perceive her as a tart, they think she just wanted to cause them trouble. They see her as Curley’s toy and as long as he doesn’t let her talk to them she shouldn’t. “We’ll I think Curley’s married a tart”. They think that she disrespects him because she doesn’t follow his orders. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad”. They also thinks that she’s below them because she’s a woman, they believe that their better then women.

Curley’s wife is actually very lonely, she has absolutely nobody. She has no one that cares or loves her. Curley gives her no love, affection or attention. His only interested in her when their in the bed room. Because he can’t give her what she needs, she looks for someone that can. She tries to form some kind of relationship with the other men. Only because she needs someone to talk to and someone to hear her. However, I think that if any of the men gave her the time and day I think that she would go for them. And I think that would be quite normal, because Curley deserves it.

Curley’s wife death is completely an accident, its something that wasn’t supposed to happen, it wasn’t supposed to end like that. His loneliness resulted in her death, if she hadn’t needed someone to talk to, then she wouldn’t have gone near Lennie and he wouldn’t of accidentally broke her neck. The sad thing was that she had actually made a connection with Lennie, he listened to her. They made that connection, she opened out her heart to him. She told him her disappointment in her marriage, her life, disappointment in her self. And he didn’t judge he just listened. Even in her death he showed no remorse all he thought about was revenge, all he thought was killing Lennie. He didn’t cry once for his young dead wife.
